Import Quiz Questions into Moodle with XML: A 3-Step Guide
Create your test with AI in SimplTests, export it as Moodle XML, and import it straight into your Moodle course. No manual formatting required.
Why Import Questions into Moodle?
Moodle is a popular open-source LMS used by schools and universities worldwide. Its Question bank accepts Moodle XML—a standard format that SimplTests can generate. Create questions with AI in SimplTests, export as XML, and import them into your Moodle course. No manual formatting, no copy-paste. Your questions land in the Question bank ready to add to any quiz activity.
1. Create and Save Your Test
Go to Create Test, add your title, and build your quiz. Use the AI generator to create multiple choice, true/false, or short answer questions. When you're done, save your test—it will appear in Saved Tests.
2. Export to Moodle XML
Open your saved test, click Export, and choose Moodle. SimplTests will generate a Moodle-compatible XML file and download it to your computer.

A Quick Note on Moodle XML
Moodle uses an XML format to describe questions—each question has a type, the question text, answer options, and the correct answer. SimplTests outputs this format automatically, so you don't need to edit the file. Just download and import.
3. Import into Moodle
In your Moodle course, go to the Question bank (via the course administration menu or a quiz activity). Click Import, choose Moodle XML as the format, upload your downloaded file, and click Import. Your questions will appear in the question bank.
- Open your Moodle course and go to Question bank.
- Click Import.
- Select Moodle XML as the file format.
- Upload the XML file you downloaded from SimplTests.
- Click Import—your questions are now in Moodle.
Add them to a quiz by creating or editing a Quiz activity and selecting your imported questions from the question bank.
